you here. dana bash is back us with. and anna navarro, a republican strategist that worked with john mccain and now a cnn contributor. we're glad you're all with us this morning. richard, you know, we have you here this morning on a day -- >> so good to be here this morning. >> a challenging day for the democrats. you saw the debate. you saw what our polls are saying this morning. >> there was a debate last night? >> yeah. >> did the president lose this? >> you know, i think luckily for me this morning history tells us that we don't know really who won or lost in terms of where it moved -- if it moved any votes until many days later. these things have to set in. but clearly, as you have been reporting already this morning and as the pundits were saying last night, i think that romney had from a theatrical perspective a great night. >> we have to wait to see what history says about who won or lost. the polls are crystal clear. 60% think romney won. on the issues, romney way ahead of the president also. who would better handle the deficit. 16-point advantage. economy, a 12-point advant

before his next showdown with president obama. john roberts is live in florida, which i understand is north of orlando? >> it is just north of orlando. it spans two countries, seminole and orange county which split between obama and mccain in 2008. he spent this morning with rob portman his debate coach to do a little debate prep. they are expecting a much different president obama to show up a week from tuesday. one advisory the chicago obama to show up. in the meantime, he continues to carry on the momentum. she working the i-4 corridor where elections is won or lost in the state of florida. heights the differences between himself and zeroing in on taxes. >> for instance, he is going to raise taxes. vice president blurted out the truth. they plan on raising taxes trillion. they have already raised them a trillion. that is increases on taxes on small business, among other things. that will mean less jobs. >> reporter: on the campaign trail in ohio, president obama appeared to have a lot of fire that he seemed to be lacking on tuesday night. and accusing romney at shocking dishones

. >> cenk: indeed, but nonetheless that has never stopped warmonger john mccain. and he gave us this dribble. >> we're leaving and they're making the appropriate adjustments. he's consistently overridden the advice of recommendations of our military leaders, and the chickens are coming home to roost there. >> cenk: wait a minute chickens coming home to roost? are youare you malcolm x? reverend wright? you're saying that we deserved to be attack? he doesn't listen to his commanders, go to general john alan, the top commander in afghanistan and he's incredible about the attacks. watch. >> should americans brace themselves for more attacks? is this going to continue? >> it will. the enemy recognizes this is a vulnerableage. iraq, the signature weapon we hadn't seen before was the i.e.d. we had to adjust to that. here i think the signature attack that we're beginning to see is going to be the insider attack. >> cenk: you see that, senator mccain, they recognize it as vulnerability, and the commanders on the ground are saying we need to adjust. it's gotten really really bad and it's to the point

, president bush was leading democratic challenger john kerry by 11 percentage points just fryer to the first presidential debate. right after the debate, which just about everybody thought that kerry had won, president bush was leading by only two points. and you know, it really didn't change a whole lot until the end of the campaign. president bush won by three points. jenna: very interesting. we see senator kerry on the screen. a lot of things we talk about, larry, is turnout when it comes to this election and how important turnout really is going to be. do debates affect turnout? >> absolutely because the turnout battle is really a battle of enthusiasm in the two party bases and, you know the romney people have been pretty frank. paul ryan was very frank over the weekend in saying the ticket has had a tough couple weeks. when you have a tough couple weeks you're enthusiasm level can decline. a good performance in a presidential debate can gin party enthusiasm. that may happen on wednesday for either side. we'll have to see what transpires in the debate. jenna: we always have to wait to ac

'm martha maccallum. the romney campaign is joining this growing chorus of lawmakers. senator john mccain saying the administration's response was inept and ignorant and susan rice blaming it on a spontaneous protest was inexcusable. >> it's either willful ignorance or abysmal ignorance to think people come to spontaneous demonstrations with mortars and heavy weapons pant attack goes on for hours. bill: both sides are complaining. governor romney's team says the white house is still getting its story mixed up. >> reporter: democrats say republicans are politicizing the tragic attack that cost of life of four americans. the republicans say the white house is cover ugging up the details for political reasons. here is axlerod. >> the president called it an act of terror the day after it happened. but when you are the responsible party, when you are the administration and you have a responsibility to act on what you know and what the intelligence community believed. >> reporter: actually it was several days after the benghazi attack before the white house called it terrorism and that came aft

john accept el said da, turned in his resignation saying in a state, quoting now: i resigned because i did not want to be a distraction for the administration and the va especially as they continue to work each day to address the needs of our nation's veterans. and secretary shinseki promises to hold anybody involved in organizing the conference accountable. the house veterans affairs committee and the house oversight and government reform committee are also conducting investigations. gregg? gregg: five million for a conference in orlando when you could do it a whole lot cheaper in a teleconference. just pick up the phone. >> reporter: so true. gregg: thanks very much, doug. jenna: we have this fox news alert, a judge postponing in pennsylvania some controversial voter identification requirements. they've been described as the toughest in the nation. and the judge has said that he is postponing the requirement, ordering the state not to enforce it in this year's presidential election. now, we're only a couple weeks away from election day, so as this judge rules, this may well stand for

john king joining us from denver, the site of the debate tomorrow night. john, you've taken a close look at these numbers. are there any nuggets in there that may be good for the romney campaign? because 70% of latinos saying they're likely to vote for the president of the united states, that's pretty bad for romney. >> reporter: wolf, i've scrubbed the numbers, looked at the cross tops and in a word, no, there is nothing encouraging for the romney campaign in the poll of likely latino voters. one way you judge an incumbent president, president obama, you ask people what do you think of job performance? all americans are split on that question. do they approve or disapprove of the president's job performance, but among latinos, nearly 7 in 10, 68% say they approve of the president's job performance. look across looking in here to find some nugget of hope for governor romney as latinos describe themselves as moderates, 76%. conservative latino voters, you would think that would be governor romney's base, 55% majority of conservative latinos plan to vote for the democratic president o

place wednesday night. president obama is using john kerry as his practice partner. the massachusetts senator is portraiting the former massachusetts governor who is mitt romney, and romney is using ron portman as his obama. paul steinhauser has more on their practice sessions. >> reporter: good morning, gary. you know, it's pretty obvious. one will definitely dominate this week in the race for the white hoe. >> i'm looking forward to the debates. >> reporter: and the first of the three showdowns comes wednesday night when president obama and republican nominee mitt romney face off in denver. both candidates have a lot on the line, especially the gop challenger, who a few days ago gave some insight into his debate preps. >> it's great to have senator rob portman. you know, he debates me from time to time. he is playing barack obama in these mock debates we have. i don't like him very much anymore, all right? he keeps on beating me up and i keep on going away shaking my head. >> reporter: romney flies to colorado monday to hold a rally that night before hunkering down for final prepara

preparations for the big debate and cnbc's own john harwood joins us live with the details. good evening, john. >> good evening, larry. two hours from that debate we've gotten a reminder in the last 24 hours with a slew of polls of how high the stakes are in this debate. we forget sometimes because we talk about how mitt romney is down in the race but he's still got a chance. only down 3 points nationally in the journal/nbc poll. in key swing points he's pulling even in florida, down 1, closer in virginia, down 2, he's still down by 8 percentage points in our poll in the state of ohio, which is a problem for this reason. look at the map of swing states. if you look at the ones where mitt romney is running within 4 points of president obama, places like florida, virginia, iowa, missouri where he's ahead, north carolina where he's even or ahead, you add all those to the solid states for mitt montana and the leaning states for mitt romney, he's still only at 263 electorate votes. he needs to bring ohio or other swe swing state, nevada, new hampshire. he's got an unparallel opportunity tonight to

, joy reed, we have anita dunn, former white house communications director, and john baybender who served on rick santorum's presidential campaign. gang, good to have you here. julian, you were saying yesterday don't try too hard for that moment and don't get too snippy, come armed with specifics. what do you think now? president obama was not listening to that. what happened? >> well, you know what? i think ed schultz made a lot of good points but you look at his exchange with the obama campaign manager. he said everybody knows about the 47%. i think the biggest problem for the obama campaign last night was they had a presumption that everybody knows the facts so they don't have to relitigate the facts in a debate. the problem is you have to come into every debate as if nobody knows anything because what mitt romney was able to do was to present a completely different person and a much more aggressive person. and as ed said, ask for the job. so i think the next time what the president needs to do is to litigate that debate as if nobody knows the facts about 47%, bain capital, all

the deal with john boehner. that's what the woodward book is all about. in other words, this is something independents love. i say clinton democrats are going to go for romney because romney knows how to make a deal by crossing the aisle and obama can't do it. >> here's where i agree with you. i think the governor of massachusetts showed up last night. not the guy who's been running for president for the last 18 months. he pivoted to the middle for the first time really and he pivoted hard. that was his best. >> was that bad? >> i think it's good for the romney campaign. >> he outfoxed the president. >> is it authentic and genuine is the question an does he have the meat to back it up? he was very specific on what he wants to repeal. he wants to repeal obama care. >> right. >> he wants to repeal cap-and-trade, dodd frank. he was very vague on what he wants to do. he didn't have a plan at all as to how he's going to pay for any of it. >> jennifer just told you all the things he said on the debate last night. the whole debate was spent attacking mitt romney's agenda which is a great place t

.m. >> steve: the president is holed up with john kerry. he said debate prep and they are making him do his home work bohoo >> brian: he was being sarcastic. but is everyone saying that the debates don't matter . they have talked about each other. and the ones who say even the benghazi hasn't thwarted the bounce president obama has gotten. of course it matters and remember what happened when john kerry did so well against president obama? >> gretchen: this is why people will tune in tomorrow because we haven't seen them together on the same stage. it is ohio and nevada, and florida and virginia. but they are not on the same stage hopefully geth the same question and so you can decide the question. gen sacky who is the spokes person for president obama trying to down play president obama's possible performance. saying he has a tendency to give long winded substantative answers comprehend they give us concrete answers. >> steve: last thing the obama people want is for the president to lecture mitt romney and united states of america. poem in the romney camp. usually the contender gets a bounc

like john mccain said bonn from a plumber that question president obama >>> john mccain alluded to joe the plumber and that barack obama would share the wealth >>> that give matt cain a boost in the polls but as matt cain learned even a memorable debate moment carries a candid only so far. the live audience for the first debate expected to be about 60 million people, half the number expected to vote in the election. chip reid cbs news >>> a look of the debate scheduled the first to bed wednesday in denver, on october 11th vice-president biden and paul ryan will lock horns in danville, kentucky, then two more presidential debates and hampstead new york and boca raton florida. a new poll shows proposition 38 that would earmark funds for schools appears to be headed for defeat an l.a. times poll shows 34 percent of voters favored the tax 52% oppose it it will affect most californians the measures wealthy backer has spent $30 million on the campaign. a competing measure supported by gov. brown will raise taxes only on the wealthy doing better, proposition 30 supported by 35 percent of vote

of the president to be able to cast a ballot. so you have people like congressman john lewis, longtime civil rights leader, who are saying this is the civil rights battle of our time now. the same fight we had in 1965, the same marchers when john lewis was beaten in alabama, this is occurring today. it is a different discussion now than it was back then, but nonetheless, the urgency to defend their right to vote is there and the black community. i would argue in the hispanic community and on college campuses, like it was in some sense during the civil rights era. it took a long time to get people to pay attention to this issue. this is something when i wrote about in september, 2011, and not allow people were covering. i think people are now more aware of this issue. you've seen the court strike down a lot of these laws for violating the voting rights act or violating the first amendment or violating other parts of the constitution, right to vote provisions of state constitutions. it is a wake-up call. it is motivated people in ways that perhaps could backfire against republicans, because in some s
